Spring Cleanse for internal balance

healing foodAyurveda teaches us how to live in balance and harmony with Mother Nature. A seasonal cleanse rests and resets our digestive system, removes toxins from the body and balances the 3 doshas; vata, pitta and kapha increasing our health and well-being. Spring is the best time to embark on a cleanse to detoxify the body, mind and Spirit. This is when the body needs to adjust to the climate change and new varieties of foods.

Over the winter months toxins and harmful impurities build up in the body causing us to feel sluggish and drawn to hibernation. As the warmth of spring time increases our energies from deep within, these toxins move towards the surface to be released. During this time, kapha is increased within our bodies which can cause mucus and phlegm to congest our organs. To avoid illness during the transition between seasons, it is important to adjust your diet and lifestyle to stay in balance.

Detox your body by choosing a light diet of easily digested foods such as freshly prepared vegetable and fruit juices, tasty salads, vegetable soups, steamed vegetables, legumes and brown basmati rice. Lighter foods cleanse and detoxifies the body leaving us feeling energized and full of vitality. Eat less sweet sour and salty foods such as dairy products, bread and pasta. These foods are mucus forming and create toxins in the body. Instead, favour foods that are bitter, astringent and pungent to aid in the detoxification and purification of your system. Foods to increase in your diet include spring greens, spinach, chard, kale, bok choy, rocket, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, asparagus, green peas, artichokes, radishes, leeks, beetroot, carrots, parsnips, celeriac, spring onion, garlic, chilli peppers, lemons, oranges, grape fruit, pomegranate, apples, pears, rhubarb, dried fruits, barley, millet, spelt, buckwheat, legumes, pulses, beans, seeds and spices, which will help to reduce excess mucus and moisture from the body.

Get up early and practice yoga or go for a brisk walk, better still do both! 🙂

Enjoy a hot lemon and ginger tea before your breakfast, adding a teaspoon of honey once the temperature has cooled down and it’s ready to drink.

Cleanse your mind from negative impressions by going on a negativity fast. Avoid negative people, situations and places and surround yourself with positive people that will raise your vibrations.

Your environment is an external impression of your inner self. Cleanse your environment decluttering all the rooms in your home, the drawers, cupboards, everything! Get rid of anything you don’t need so you can create space for new things to enter into your life.

Your body and mind will thank you for tuning into Mother Nature and living in the flow of life. Try to implement today’s guidance as much as possible and watch your lifestyle transform right before your eyes!
