Yoga for Martial Arts – An Inspirational Story

After breaking my back in 2004, I thought I’d never walk again let alone get back into kickboxing!

It was months before I got back on my feet learning to walk again. I needed help with everything, even simple things like eating, drinking and getting dressed. With the support and help of my family and friends, I was determined to get better.

Using the power of my mind and positive intentions, within a year I felt much stronger and started to re-build my business as a mobile sports therapist and personal trainer. My schedule got busy very quickly and I was so happy to be doing what I love helping people to achieve their health, fitness and well-being goals. I often worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week, although, when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work – maybe I overworked due to being bed bound for so long?!

When I was helping others I was in my element and on such a high vibration, I felt great and pain free!

It was only when I stopped and relaxed that I noticed the pain was still there. I never allowed myself to stop and relax, I was always on the go pushing the pain to the back of my mind pretending it wasn’t there!

I was teaching 20+ fitness classes per week, including make the weight boxing courses for adults which was so much fun. I loved coaching primary and secondary school children boxing during the summer holidays – sometimes I’d throw in a kick or 2 when I was on the bags before class, but I paid the price the next day, my back didn’t like double kicks back then! :-/

Boxing really helped to keep my spine healthy and flexible, it just couldn’t handle explosive kicks!

I suffered with chronic back pain for almost 7 years, the only thing that helped relieve the pain was yoga.

Due to my busy schedule I was only doing a couple of yoga classes a week, so I was still suffering with pain 5 days out of 7!

After putting up with the pain for so long, I realized it was time I treated myself the same way I would if a patient came to see me with back pain, so I created a yoga therapy programme that I stuck to religiously. For the first time since breaking my back, I had gone a whole week without pain, it was incredible, nothing short of a miracle!

I listened to my body and followed the guidance I felt within….

Having previously experiencing pain free days whenever I practiced yoga, my mind expected to heal itself once I committed to a daily yoga practice.

Our expectations have tremendous power to transform our current beliefs.

I had finally committed to a daily yoga practice and knew that I had found the cure for my back pain. This encouraged me to continue the yoga therapy programme and by the end of the 6 weeks it was a miracle, the pain had completely gone!

Starting my day with yoga put me into a pain free space where my positive expectations changed the neural pathways in my brain, changing the conversation that was going on between my body and mind. My thoughts and beliefs were supporting the action I was taking with my daily yoga practice. This created a new positive environment inside my body and mind so that I could experience the current reality I was now telling myself…

“I AM HEALED, I HAVE A STRONG HEALTHY BACK!”

My pain disappeared because I expected it too once I started doing yoga every day. My thoughts, beliefs and actions were aligned leading to my miraculous healing!

This was in January 2011, I have been free from pain for over 7 years now and have written a book on how to heal your back pain naturally to inspire others that are suffering with chronic back pain to heal themselves naturally too! Check it out here:

Anything is possible when you believe!

YES!!! I am healed! I have a strong healthy back!

After healing my back pain naturally, I decided to get back into kickboxing. I done a few classes at different gyms and one day a friend asked me to go to MMA with her. I loved it and really enjoyed the class. I have been training with 12 Gauge MMA for around 6 years now! WOW How time flies!

I was doing kickboxing classes at first but I’m not a fan of training in the evening any more, I like to get up early and go to bed early. This is a healthy routine I developed once I committed to a daily yoga practice.

For the past 5 years or so, when I am not in India or Thailand, I have been training one – to – one with Matthew Thorpe, founder of 12 Gauge MMA.

We split the sessions and do Muay Thai Kickboxing and Yoga, it’s an awesome combination!

Martial Arts & yoga compliment each other so beautifully. They share similar principles and philosophy, with foundations in cultivating discipline in ones life, restoring balance to body, mind and spirit.

Less than 2 years after healing my back pain naturally through living a yoga lifestyle, I fulfilled a life long dream of staying on a Muay Thai bootcamp in Thailand training with professional fighters every day for a month! It was amazing! I was at my fittest and strongest when I was there! 🙂
